The Water Pump did not present too much of a problem as its shape
was on the old sign.
Now came the difficult bit, Hops and Cherries.
Before deciding how to make them I first needed to see, in detail,
what they looked like.
For this I went to Crispin’s Fish shop, where they have a sign that
contains both hops and cherries. During the hop picking season I
visited Mockbegger Farm, and took some photos of hops on the bine,
to use during the development stage of making the hops. These
photos were very helpful, not just for each independent hop, but also
for making the leaves and putting together the final bunches.
The cherries were handled in much the same way. I was fortunate
that Teynham School has a number of cherry trees close to the road,
from which I cut a small tip off a branch. It provided the material to
copy, in the making of the leaves and also for the positioning of
cherries and leaves in the final fixing.
On completion of the new sign, I then turned my attention to the post
that the sign is mounted on. This was looking a little tired, and in need
of a bit of TLC. Scrubbed and painted, it was then ready to receive
the new sign.
On the Seventh of July 2007 (07/07/07) my son Mark and myself
constructed the tower scaffold and replaced the newly refurbished
frame that houses the new sign. Once fixed in position the new sign
was erected in place.
A check was made to ensure all metal work had been soundly painted
and would be protected from the elements.
The monies received from the Parish Council were split and donated
to Demelza House and Teynham Church.
